THE MAKING OF CARTOON DESIGN & CARTOON PICTURES

Below is the process how we creatively design and draw the cartoon from scratch.

cartoon design sketching process image

STEP 1: SKETCHING THE CARTOON

Our cartoon pictures design process is quite simple and old fashioned. After we have gathered all the required info from you, we get to work on the cartoon character development in terms of the look and feel. We also conduct a little research to understand how best to create the cartoon. The attitude of the cartoon character is very important to communicate the message effectively.

Once we have decided the style and the look we then draw some sketches on paper. We draw a few sketches and show it to you. If you are happy with the direction of the initial sketch we then proceed to the next stage. If you do not like the direction then we come back with a second cartoon concept which is usually totally different from the first. We keep this up until we arrive at a pencil sketch that you are 200% happy with.

STEP 2: INKING THE CARTOON

Once you have selected the initial cartoon concept, we then proceed with inking the cartoon sketch. Usually this is also done on paper but some times, depending on the design style and requirement, we might ink the sketch after we have scanned and converted the pencil cartoon sketch into a digital format on the computer.

For cartoon logo and cartoon mascot, we will work in vector format. Vector files are files that you can resize, scale, and even change colors or fonts without losing any quality or resolution on your image. Vector files are mostly used by professional designers or print shops.

Once this is done, it ends up in your email inbox again. We need a "thumbs-up" from you before proceeding to the coloring phase. If you are not happy with how this stage looks, we redraw it until you are.

STEP 3: COLORING THE CARTOON

The next stage of the cartoon creation process is to start coloring the cartoon character. We use either Adobe Photoshop CS2 or Adobe Illustrator CS2 to color the cartoon. Normally we chose the colors but you can also request for a certain set of colors to be used.

We also do not mind experimenting with colors and trying to determine which combination the cartoon will look best. You can say "I want to see my cartoon in orange, in blue and in red please" and we will color it all 3 ways.

STEP 4: SHADING & HIGHLIGHTING

After you have approved your final choice, we then add the shadows and highlights effects that will enhance and make the cartoon 'comes to life'.

STEP 5: ADDING TEXT & BACKGROUND (IF REQUIRED)

Once the cartoon image is created, we are ready to begin the process of creating the lettering and any background that might be needed.

We will scroll through hundreds of fonts and pick any that we feel might work for the design - the one that would appeal and in line with the message that the client is trying to show.

The final cartoon files are delivered via email. All files are in CMYK and RGB colors modes. We deliver your design in these formats:

  • AI (adobe illustrator) vector format, editable file. Your printers, web designers, silk screen printers, etc. will use this file.
  • EPS (encapsulated postscript) vector format, editable file. Your printers, web designers, silk screen printers, etc. will use this file.
  • TIFF (tagged image file format) high-resolution 300 dpi.
  • PSD (adobe photoshop) high-resolution 300 dpi non layered file.
  • GIF (graphic interfile format) 72dpi files. This file is for Web use only. You can use this file on your web site and view it with any browser. Fully optimized.
  • JPEG (joint professional experts group) 300 and 72dpi files. This file is for Web and proof use only. You can view it with any browser.

If you need your designs in any other file format, just tell us and we would be happy to provide you the designs in that file format. However, for cartoon illustration or cartoon pictures, we may send fewer formats. Please ask your printer for the correct files needed and let us know.

That is everything. Sit back and enjoy your cartoons!
